Chat N Chicknfun Thread

what kinds of chickens do you have and how do they fare in the really cold times?

Some other people in Alaska have chickens that actually go out in the snow in the winter.....

I am thinking that where my house is, is too windy.

Not sure...but they do NOT like going out in the deep snowy winter.

I set up my coop complex so that they can get into the greenhouse during the winter months.

That keeps them happy. Before I had the greenhouse, I had problems with them picking at each other

mostly eggs...

a few are pets for my kids, and I eat the extras, but I have never done a big "just for meat" order

what about you?

I actually find it difficult to order breeds purely for production, I like all of the different colors and personalities, that sometimes it is difficult to be practical.

OH, boy, I definitely understand that!! I love all of them!! I have never eaten any of mine, but they are just over a year old now. I do eat and sell the eggs- not a ton of money from it, but it is to the point that it covers the feed bill- till prod drops.....
I may have to start processing a little....I have a broodsy silkie that hatched out 5 eggs, there are at least 2 roos, and I have no room for more roos!!
