Chat N Chicknfun Thread

Thanks Chicka, that makes me feel a little better. I know when I started out I wanted pullet size birds since I didn't have a clue or time to raise chickies. OK, that makes sense and feel better about the concept....thanks and hope there was no offense?
You are welcome and no offense! But after I brooded 36 chicks and poults this year I told my DH that I don't want to brood anymore this year! Either the birds do it or we wait till next year and still let the birds do it or buy some more at auction.... lol Good luck with them! Let me know what you decide to do?

OK, next question? Who goes to auctions to buy 9 to 10 month old roos? Sounds stupid I guess.
But, I just have this unreal fear of those who use them for cock fighting, and if they are just gonna butcher them, well, I might as well.

How many individual chicken folks go to auction looking for a good roo? I just no experience with it yet. I could just see me, I'd make folks fill out an application for my birds to see if they qualify.....heeeheeee

Really though, not kidding.....?

I been to one once. BEWARE of birds for sell at them. Make darn sure if you ever buy one from there you keep it clear of your other birds. Never had a good experience at one with birds.

Wow!
Those RIR are so much darker than mine!

Are all heritage RIR supposed to be that dark?

And, I don't know, just guessing, the "heritage" part means you are going for what RIR looked and acted like 50 or so years ago?

These are those. The old fashion reds. Got these from a breeder. The breeder himself. Ricky Bates/Ron Fogly bloodlines. You are probably like most have Production Reds. Not the same. I have a pen full of Production reds myself, just for eggs.

Besides the looks, production reds lay great for the first 2 if your lucky 3 years then done pretty much. Where HRIR dont lay good for the first year but will lay VERY LARGE eggs for 4-5 years. But they don't lay as many as the production reds. The PRIR are breed either with a NH or leghorn so theylay a lot. But get burnt out after a few years. Or less.

And yes, they are suppose to be that dark. Look how dark the beak is. That will give you a sign on how dark your HRIR will be. Production Reds have a very light beak. I can show you the two together if you want. Since I have both.

I was told that when ever you buy any new birds from whom ever or where ever you should keep them in quarantine for at least two weeks anyways! Just to make sure they are not sick or have any problems! So yes be careful if you do buy. I have another pen set up just for such an occasion and it is not anywhere near my birds Tony! Thank you!

Same here. Some go to extremes and will keep them apart for 6 weeks.

I started worming my birds this morning! And I guess I have to call the State Vet to get my birds tested now that half of them are to be 4 months old. I need to go on and get that done and out of the way.

Oh, please do!

After all of these years having hatchery chickens, I am planning next year to go to only two or three QUALITY breeds (so not from a hatchery). But am not yet completely set as to which breeds I want.

I love the older breeds.

This year I went with HRIR and Heritage Delawares. Both great cold weather layers, since you live there. LOL
