Chat room for non religious poultry keepers! :D

I hereby make you an honorary Canadian.

Also, he probably had to go to bed. He's in Greece, after all. They have weird time over there. :lau

As for what you said, you probably mean a bad habit? Like biting your fingernails, only worse. Don't have to tell us.

Speaking of weird time, it's past 3 am here, I need to go to bed too. Boyfriend has messed up my sleep (since we're in different countries, we watch shows and movies over the internet, or game together).
Thanks!! And yeah, definitely worse than biting my nails lol but yeah. And yeah I keep sleeping a tiny bit then waking up.

My thoughts too, but *which one*??! I'll have to talk to my daughter about culling 'her' Cayuga mix drake. That's in brackets because she hardly even looks at them anymore, much less cares for them. I'm the one who's been buying all the feed for them for the past year and a half or more, even when I'm not working.

I think I'm going to bring it down to three drakes, at least for the winter. The Magpie, and the two blue boys (Smokey and The Bandit).

Yeah, that's the tough part! Narrowing them down to three is better than nothing, though, right?

Someone else getting an animal and then not wanting to take care of it is all too familiar to me. 😅 Unfortunately, I cannot let an animal go neglected if I have the ability to at least give them their basic needs, so every time that happens I end up saddled with a new creature I didn't want. 😩 Thankfully, I've been able to impress upon my family my disdain for such behavior, so it hasn't happened in a while.

I probably have a few recessive whites then. Interestingly, the Magpie female is white. As a duckling, she was a Blue. When she grew her adult feathering though, they all came in white. Same with her sister. Their brother was a black, and he retained those colours.

I don't know if this is the same with ducklings so take this with a grain of salt, but recessive white chicken chicks can be deceptively dark-colored at hatch, anything from just a tinge of gray on their backs up to being a smoky gray color overall that still feathers out pure white.

Yeah, I'm not interested in having them lay constantly, since that's hard on their bodies. So I have no qualms with reduced egg production. I'd rather have healthy and long-lived stock at the cost of a few eggs and a bot of meat, than go to extremes.

I find it shameful what we've bred some species for.

Agree, I no longer will even consider buying the high production egg layer hybrids or strains in chickens. Their bodies just can't sustain that type of production. 🙁 I have a few Cochin bantam pullets who went into lay way earlier than their mothers did and I've been strongly considering calling them culls just because I don't want to breed for early egg laying like that.

Oh geez! That's one heck of a cull! I need to do the same with the Muscovy. I have 19 remaining babies from this year (sold some, yay!), and the males will be going to the freezer. I then have to hold back a bunch of females since I lost quite a few last Spring. I may try to sell some of them for a bit of extra cash. I just don't feel like processing so many! Not until I get a plucker.

Very much so! I'm trying to breed them toward the standard, which requires hatching as much as possible and narrowing it down to the very best. The hard part is the narrowing down. 😅 I also keep getting ghosted when people message me inquiring about my extras, which is disheartening. I really don't want to process these babies, but I just don't have the room for all of them once the snow starts flying, so I have limited options there. 😩

I think two of my chickens got into something... Of course, it would be the cockerel I was planning on holding back and one of the prettier pullets. Both are having trouble staying up on their legs and walking. I have them in a separate pen right now and they seem a *bit* better? But it's been several days. No curled toes, just weakness/stiffness.

Gonna give them at least another week. If they don't get better, I'll probably have to cull... :(

Not sure how young you're talking with them, but have they been on medicated chick starter by any chance? Weakness in the legs can be a sign of a B vitamin deficiency, which medicated starter can cause. You could try getting them a B-vitamin complex and see if that improves their leg strength. :fl

I need some good vibes/wishes/something please. I can’t say why for various reasons but yeah. 😭
I need more vibes now for a different situation. UGH.

Good vibes heading your way :hugs

Thanks!!!

I have a question... this habit... what does it do for you (release? relief?) that you could get another way? But I don't mean replacing it with drugs or alcohol...

Sorry if I'm getting too personal! I'm not trying to be a therapist, really.

It’s okay, you’re not getting too personal! Honestly I’m not sure what it does anymore. Nothing really. Hence why I was saying it’s kind of like an addiction cause I just have to do it now. It doesn’t actually work anymore. But I do think I should try to find something to replace it. Like maybe walking the dog or watching TV or something.

I used to weigh about 60-70 pounds more than I do now. Food screamed my name, calling me, calling me, especially sweets.

One thing that really helped me lose weight was finding something else to do to get past that minute/10 minutes when all I wanted was chocolate. Go take a shower. Go for a walk. Take a nap, knit, whatever. Knitting was great, as it took both hands, and I couldn't eat while I was going it. I often read while I ate, so that wasn't always the best substitute.

This was long before the internet, or that would have been a good substitute. :)
