Cheap source of litter for using in deep litter method?

I know this is an old thread, but another idea for free newspapers may be your local recycle bins. We have great big dumpsters just for paper. You could probably load up a pickup full of newspapers on any given day.

I use grass clippings collected from my riding lawn mower, leaves raked up in the yard, and I make my own wood chips from fallen branches and trees.

I thought sawdust was too fine for chicken runs? Can you use any type of saw dust?
