The feathers are good representation of why it is important that layers are fed a balanced diet. Protein shortage effects not only feather growth but also effects egg production and the long term health of the bird. This is especially true when young birds are developing internal organs, reproductive tract, digestive system etc. . One could make a bird that is genetically a superior layer a below average layer if the internal organs do not develop properly. Vitamins and trace nutrients are also very important.
