Thanks for thinking of me! Been a tough sad time here. Many of our larger animals came to our home as babies during the same time in the 24 years. Its been so sad loosing my seniors after all these years. Lots of empty spaces and time that use to be so filled during the day enjoying them being with us that are gone. Feeling on the mend to pop back in and see all the great news on how everyone else is doing.

Im sorry for your losses. I understand. We've lost so many to old age. It is sad. And as we are seniors too, we've decided not to get anymore animals of any kind once these are gone.

Thank you and sorry as well for your loss too. Same mind frame here, we grew old with them and have decided not to add animals to the farm. I can't see life without chickens, Love my hens, but our roosters are just the best for making my day. Always heart felt to walk into our mud room to go outside, and find my roosters laying with my LGD beating the heat for the day.. Hugs your way

I agree. I have some of the best roosters, and they always make me laugh. I'm a little sad that there will be no "beginner crowing contests" this year. Hugs back at you!

Howdy all, sorry for not being around much, been having fun with the coop, existing structure upgrades, and expansions, redesigning some areas. Added a connection to compost through the chunnel, added some more new babies. Daily egg production has slowed, time to cull the older birds but I just love them so much, it has been hard. Thanks for all the answers when I still have questions!!

Latest news for my flock:

I got day old chicks for the first time ever this year (from TSC), and it has been an interesting experience. It looks like we may have three roosters in the mix out of a total of 10 chicks purchased. Not too bad, considering a couple of the varieties I selected were straight run - plus TSC is not known for being accurate in their breed/sexing identification. I was OK with that since they were having a buy one get one free special.

I’m not sure I’ll try this again to be honest- it was a bigger challenge than I had planned for, mostly in terms of housing and supplies. Until this year I always replenished from started pullets in the 8 to 10 week old age range. I’ve even added a few adult rescues after first quarantining them.

My next experiment will likely be letting one of my broody hens hatch a few eggs and see how that turns out.

Hello! I'm still here but don't comment often. I keep forgetting to save my login info. Right now we're having a rough go of it. Lost 5 of the 6 to the heat and hope to get at least one other chicken soon for sweet lady Tater to get a friend (after quarantine, ofc).

We ruled out avian flu (thank god!!) and other diseases, set up misters and an auto-waterer, and added ventilation to the coop and nest. Fingers crossed we get out the other side of this heatwave!

It does sound like you are keeping busy with the flock. Egg production can slow down quite a bit when they get older.
