Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

I'm not familiar with rollout nest boxes but the egg production shouldn't go down just because they don't like the nest boxes.

You could try painting the inside black and hang black curtains. Then neither the laying hen nor the stalking hen could see the eggs laid.

I got tired of ours sleeping in the nest boxes at night, so since there's horse bedding pellets on the floor, thought we'd try them in the nest boxes. They didn't seem to care.

Now at least they're sleeping on pellets, and poop gets absorbed by them, so keep the eggs clean for when they leave and come back to lay an egg. I stir those with a stick about once a week.

You'll have to break them off lying elsewhere by putting a brick or overturned bucket, something of the sort in the spots they lay.

Good luck with this. It's sometimes a neverending problem. I hope you can fix them!

Blacking out the nest boxes and blocking their alternative nesting places are good ideas. We’ll try that.
Thanks for responding!

Glad to see you back. Ironically, I had already been to your link several days ago and adore your birds! ❤️ Thank you for sharing!

Hello, it's been a while since I've posted anything. Work has been incredibly demanding for months. It is finally slowing down for the summer.

Currently hubby and I are having fun with calico bantam cochins. We are getting beautiful chicks! This weekend has been a little challenging as we have 2 hen sitting on about 15 eggs. They are not turning out to be the best moms. So we have had to set up a brooder and an incubator rather quickly.

I was up until 4am last night with a chick "they" let get shrink wrapped. It's doing great right now. But, we had an incident with the incubator cover and had 3 eggs get damaged. Well, it turns out 2 were bad. The 3rd however, had a live chick that started chirping from the trash bag that hubby had put it in.

I was busy taking care of the shrink wrapped baby. Well, he didn't know which of the 3 the chirping was coming from. He broke apart the shell trying to save it. Then realized it may have just pipped and was still absorbing the yoke. So, we quickly put it in the incubator and I incread the humidity to 80% and crossed our fingers.

That's when I once again came to BYC to find out the chances of the little one surviving. I definitely got all the information I needed to realize that the little one had a good chance at making it. We just love this site!

So far the little one is slowly coming along and we think that somehow the baby may make it. We are trying to be patient, which is so hard in these situations. But, we are very hopeful and are following advice given on the threads about this situation.

Thank you for checking on me. I really appreciate you.

We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.

If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to. :)

(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)
Hello! I'm still alive lol
Last may I moved into an apartment and unfortunately had to give my birds to a friend. They're being well taken care of but I miss them. :hit

Oh my, what an incredible story! I sure hope this little one survives, as both of you have done so much to try to save it. It does sound hopeful though if it's still alive at this point!

Thanks so much for getting back to us, and glad to hear from you!

Awe, so sorry. It must be hard to not have your chickens anymore. Perhaps sometime down the road of life, you'll be in a place where you can have them again!

Thanks so much for getting back to us! It was nice to hear from you even though it's on a sad note. Best wishes to you!
