we have 8 chicks that are 5 weeks old. it's funny to watch them, 2 decide they're gonna fluff up and 'bump' with that 'you want some of me' look in their eye, only to have a third come and interupt....which usually sends the first two scurrying away, LOL. since i'm out of work at the moment, i have a lot of time to sit and watch them. amazing how young they start doing the things the grown hens do.
Yes mine are getting entertaining!!!! I do have a "tough guy" and I send him away to cool off once in a while. He[I'm pretty sure that its a he]is the biggest one of the bunch. They all do it.Then they all lay around and rest together.
You might also see them trying to stand taller than each other. Once one stretches their neck up, the challenger usually tries to stretch it up even taller. My 5-week old Silkies try to challenge everyone else, even tho they are much smaller.
I'm really glad to hear this...I brought home four babies and today noticed that three of them were doing the stretching tall / chest bumping thing...since I'm hoping that I have at least a couple that aren't roos...(and of course, my favorite that I'm hoping is not a roo was doing it!) - I'm really hoping its not an indicator that they are roos...two do it quite a bit...another I've seen do it once and the fourth...not at all - yet...
they are a mixture of Polish and Sultan if breed makes any difference...
Oh I am so happy to read this all of mine do it and one of them gets this stone cold look on her face and just makes herself tall and stares at whoever is attempting this feat of hierarchy and the one that started it walks away defeated. Its like she's to tough to even engage its really funny!
