Chest Freezer Chill Tank

I have an old working chest freezer in my basement that we underutilize. I am considering moving into my barn to use as a chill tank. Has anyone used one like this, and how did it work?

I haven't done it, but i did have the same idea. The only thing I thought would be a pain was sanitizing after each use and draining would be slow.

I might try this. I use both the cornish x and my mix layer eggs I hatch. But the cornish I let them get huge. up to 10lbs. cleaned. They take a lot of room in the ice chests. I have to use 2-4 ice chests and that alot of ice. I do 15 at a time. I would have to run a drain hose off of it. I need to do some thinking on this one. Good idea!!!!!!!!!

So long as you didn't pierce the freon lines, you could put a tap in the side for draining.

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. The idea about putting a tap into it to drain isn't all that different than putting a hole in a fridge for a keg tap.

How do you drain and clean after you are done?

Ours had a built in drain plug when we bought it 18 years ago from Sears. Drain plugs are easy to install if you buy the correct type. Try an old time hardware store, ask for a kit to install drain in it--usually they know exactly what you need and probably order it for you. Tractor Supply carries some (limited) types of gasket plug drains for their water tanks and with some modifications would probably work.

That sounds like a good idea, but is it water tight? Aren't there holes that would need to be covered up- like for the fan?
