Nice to know people nearby- I am in Edison Park and just started this whole chicken addiction June 2013.
My hubby just finished our coop this past Thanksgiving weekend and thankfully right before the freezing cold we are now getting. I was able to talk him into building our coop from an old play structure that's been sitting in the yard. And yup he had to build the run too, poor guy haha. And yes the cost even though we did repurpose a lot of wood was a lil shocker, but my hubby got obsessed with the project and there was no stopping him- yay for me. Eventually in honor of my hubby's hard work and suffering I plan to post the method to his creation on the coop page.
We have three easter egger bantams who haven't had any eggs yet and I think I wont have any til spring... too cold and it gets dark sooo early. I swear I am gonna bronze that first tiny egg
. Hope we can keep this thread going. I need moral support... Just wondering does anyone heat their coop? Mine is not insulated and no heat. I have a heated dog bowl for water and put up clear shower curtains around run to block wind and snow. I also put hay bales around the base of coop for additional wind block. BTW Fresh Farms on Touhy $2.99 for large bale of hay. Ok gotta go. Happy day and stay warm.
Your coop and your chickies are adorable! You aren't too far from me in Jefferson Park.
Although it's been cold, I don't heat my coop, I just used a clear drop cloth to windproof most of the run. I left the two ends open so that there's some circulation though. Don't forget about that circulation!
The temps have been below zero and they still seem to be ok.
