Chick 🐥 Peck my Son’s Eye 👁

Has anyone ever heard of getting pecked in the eye by a chick/chicken? My almost 13yo son was sitting on a chair in the coop with our 17 three-week-old chicks and the Buff Orpington sitting on my son’s leg pecked him in the eyeball 👁 as he was bending over to push in a horizontal nipple for the chicks to drink. I took him to the eye doctor and he has a superficial scratch across his cornea in his line of vision. He could not read the very large letters out of that eye. We received antibiotic drops and ointment and have to see the doctor again tomorrow.

Unfortunately chickens like shiny things and the eyes are very shiny! Mine like to peck the lens on my phone and I’ve had one peck me in the eye before but thankfully it wasn’t bad.

Chickens do like to peck things... I've been pecked in the eye once or twice before, by adult hens. It felt pretty gritty for a little while, but that faded.
I think that they're just kind of curious and want a taste. The little ones like my teeth, too -- chickens are weird.
I'm glad that your son is okay, and I hope that his eye feels better soon.

Ive gotten pecked in the eye before. More than once. Younger birds seem to do it more.

I pay close attention with birds near my face. I always look down at them when they're being held so I'm not right in reach, and as soon as they tilt their head while looking at me, I make more distance. I usually see the tilt before the peck

Yes, he said the chick extended her neck, and then he looked at her and “peck” right in the eye. Lol!
