Chick afraid of the dark.

Sorry to hear you lost one! Yes, they seem to have issues adjusting to the dark when they are "teenagers." My 6 girls cried and cried and cried when I would turn off the light for them to go to sleep at night while they still lived in our garage. It was heart-wrenching but after about 15 minutes they would settle down, and by the time they were old enough for the coop they happily went to bed without issues.

It is funny how they want night lights (and they're so cute it's hard not to cave and pick them up to calm them!).

I just leave a 40w colored "party light" on when they no longer need heat. You can buy them year round at walmart and many other stores. It provides a little more light than a night light without taking much electricity and without heating them any. Then they don't scream constantly from their light suddenly going away. Eventually they either go to the coop or I need my lamp for something else so I turn it off during the day. It gets dark gradually that night and they don't care.

I just have to say that it is 28 degrees in my coop right now. They have a light to keep it a little warmer than outside right now. 5 degrees now with wind chills in the negitive teens. Your chickens are spoiled!
