Chick attacked by rat

That’s good. If you have him separated he might get lonely. I notice if I have a chick that’s injured I put it with its siblings and it usually stimulates em a bit. Eyes staying open longer is a good sign of energy and health. Hopefully he will stay the course
The siblings are currently still in the brooder, I’m worried he might get trampled on by them.
I have him in a box above the brooder so he can hear them.
I guess I just got to hope for the best. X

Hopefully he will be ok. If he has his eyes open and he is peeping and seems to be a little alert I think he will be ok!

I just gave him a bit more sugar water and he got up now sat up!
Fingers crossed. Thank you for all your help x

Most coops and brooders need 1/2 inch hardware cloth wire fencing to keep out small predators. Usually rats will bite off toes. Weasels will injure necks or bite them the heads off. Weasels can get into chickenwire. I hope your chick survives. A locked rat bait station and Just One Bite or similar rat bait will usually take care of rats. Place the bait station outside of the coop where chickens and pets cannot get to it.

Hi thanks for your message.
It was a rat I heard them getting distressed went out to see them and it ran away.
he seems to be doing a bit better now but still weak so fingers crossed. X

How’s the chick doing?
He’s hanging in there.
Still not much movement but he’s trying.
Sugar water has perked him up a bit.
I want to try clean up the wound area but petrified of hurting him. X
Thank you for asking.

If the wound looks dirty/dusty you could try to clean it with a saline rinse which is fairly painless and easy.

I did clear it up with saline water as soon as I saw the injury.
Was going to let him rest until tomorrow then give him a check over. X
