:( Chick born w/insides OUT

Thanks guys. I had to end up doing it to another one too
sad.png
It was born with it's brains not covered and it's beak was messed up. It had a bottom but the top wasn't finished growning. It was very odd. It was chirping & moving too, but it's brain was exposed, so I had to get another pair of scizzors. It's really horrific to do that.
In the end, I have 2 little chicks that appear to be healthy, and they are covered so no one can eat them (although only 1 dog is in & she is sleeping in my room. They appear that they are either PB, RIRs or my buff girls x my RIR roo, so they should be pretty birds.
Thanks again for you support guys...it really is nice to have something to come to.

What a time you've had! I am so sorry for the ordeal you went through with this.

How are the 2 baby peepers doing? I hope they will be super-hyper-handfuls so you won't have to think of these last few days.

As of this a.m. they are both doing pretty well. One I know is 100% (it's the 1st 1 I knew was ok) the other was appears that way as well, I guess it's just after having the 1 before & after it being 'deformed' that I just can't help but question. I'll give it a week and make sure they've eaten like they should, then I'll be relieved that I got 2.

I know this may be a little late, but I've seen people euthinize chickens and ducks using a little more "hands off" approach.
For little chicks that had gotten mauled by a cat, a friend put them in a paper bag and put it in the freezer. For a larger bird he had put it in a trash can with a lid and ran a hose from the car exaust and into the can. Both time they just went to sleep in less than 5 minutes.
Now I'm not saying that using a knife isn't quicker and less painful, but definately not cleaner or easier. With both freezing and carbon monoxide poisoning they just go to sleep.

I'm sorry you had to do this, but on the other hand it is heartening to see that you were responsible and did the right thing and end the poor little one suffering. Don't get me going on people who neglect animals and their quality of life. Suffering sucks and I don't wish it on anyone or any living thing. Quality of life is always better than quantity.

Peace & Aloha,
Cory

Thanks Cory. That is helpful, b/c if you see my thread 'Wazine wormer WARNING' I have another batch due Sat. that *may* have similar problems, so I do think that is a decent 2nd option. I appreciate it.
