Chick Born with No Vent! What DO I do.

Rachel, you are certainly right. I learned my lesson with that puppy. I am apalled by the large number of replies that say "off with their head," for just about any problem that is posted, even trivial ones. I know we live in a disposable society - dump things rather than repair, etc. etc. but, I get sickened when I see it applies to living things as well. Why the rush to judgement? HOw about a new slogan "GIVE THE CHICKS A CHANCE!!"

I took the posts of "cull now" as a means to prevent further suffering... THANKFULLY - this was not needed, but I didn't take them to mean the little one was "disposable". With the information that there was no vent - the most humane way to handle the situation was to humanely stop the suffering. JMHO.

I'm VERY happy the baby is okay!!!

I was responding to the posts where they said to cull and then told the best way - with scissors, with this, or that, sometimes explicit instructions. I wish they would preface the advice by saying, IF the chick is suffering, or getting worse, this is the humane thing to do.

I understand what you mean. Of course if an animal is suffering you should cull, but if it is not and you can give nature a bit of a chance to resolve it that wouldn't hurt either.

shouldn't be so quick to CULL, CULL, CULL

I so agree with you!

I had a teenage bird that broke her leg, I had no idea how she did it. But any way no matter who I ask said I couldn't fix it, to cull. Well I just couldn't believe there was no way to fix it. I figured out where it was broke and made a cast. I didn't have to leave it on long, and I took it off, she still rested a lot, so I waited another week and let her run around the house and she is doing great today. you would never know she had a broken leg!

I am happy this little bird made it, sometimes they do suprise you and they do pull through!

See?! That's wonderful! I feel like there are many situations where if people just thought outside the box a bit and gave some extra TLC and time, culling wouldn't be necessary. In my opinion, it should be a LAST resort, not just assume nothing can be done and resort to it.

well runts make it too, I wouldn't worry if she is eating, drinking, poo. give vit. if not already, maybe give her egg too as a treat if you are not already.
