chick bums

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good advice above. You might also try putting a little olive oil on the butt of the one problem chick after you clean it, it helps keep the poop from sticking to the fuzz.

I don't know how to start a new post for a new question... I have read that the more time you spend with your chicks the more they will love you. But I'm not sure what is enough or to much time. I love them little babies so I'll scoop them all um and put them in a little travel tote that has the same bedding that is in there big home and I'll take them all in the house at night and watch tv with them and give them all snuggles. Now I have been doing this while my 2 year old son is napping as well cuz I need to clean their bumms. I'm also out every morning just talking to them.... So am I "bothering" them to much? They are so small I don't want to over exert them. Or do they need all the mommy time they can get?

There is no such thing as too much time with them. At worst case you won't be able to sit in your back yard without someone hopping on your lap looking for pets. I walk around with my tamer ones on my shoulder while I do chores. The best rooster I have ever had would even hop off to go poo then get back on. Just make sure you wear something that you don't mind getting poo on if you do that. I have a whole set of clothes just for cleaning out stalls and coops, they are already going to get poo on them so what more is a little chicken poo too.

In this case, I would consider handling the ones with pasty butt as little extra as possible until it stops. The handling maybe a stressor for the chicks even if they don't seem to mind, and you don't want anything else upsetting them if you can help it until they are back to normal.

Its only the one that has a yucky bum and that one is the smallest and seems to love me time the most :(. Poor lil lady. O well, she will hopefully get better soon and I'll be able to love her more again. She has had this yucky bum since I got her so we are on day 5 now.

Did you put a little oil on her bum like someone had suggested? It does keep it from sticking to the bum fluff.

When they are all fully feathered without heat and before that with heat. I know of some people that brood right in the coop so they are never in the house. Just remember if they are not fully feathered or if you have a really cold night (below freezing) you will need to provide heat for them.
