Chick Can't Poop!

Quote:
I'm not a fan of culling either. I do everything possible to save the chick. Sometimes it is what is best though. My preferred method is decapitation because it is the quickest for the chick but I agree it is the most difficult on the person. If I was forced to choose between CO2 and freezing....I would choose CO2. It seems like freezing would be horribly painful.

I'm just sharing my opinion. The choice is yours to make.

i'm a vet tech student, jsut started, so for me it's completely unnatural to want to kill something, i'm supposed to be saving it!

right now i've just been watching her get weaker and weaker... i'm hoping she'll just drift off during the night peacefully and i won't have to do anything... or make a miraculous recovery, but judging by how she looks, and how all my other sick animals i've had looked before they died, i'm not getting my hopes up... done everything i can, now all i gotta do is wait, and work with my won't poop, splayed legged chick...

oh and i've got another chick that just sits there. nothing else, just sits and stares at you. put it in front of water it drinks, put it in front of food it eats, pick it up and it screams at you to put it back down...

like i said, i'm not happy with this batch of chicks... they are all different breeds so i don't think its anything genetically wrong, so the incubator is getting completely disinfected tomorrow and going to sit for a bit before anything else goes in there...

The other concern is the longer you keep theses sick ones with the ones who are still moving forward you put them in danger, as a tec student you will find that sometimes it is up the human to do what is best for the animal weather we like it or NOT... passing away in the night is not nessisarilly the most peaceful way, but as a human we can think ok it died in its sleep how peaceful, and not OMg it lay there suffering all night and died because the pain we were unaware of finally got the best of it. I was an animal control officer for a while, I am one of the most compassionat people you will ever meet when it comes to animals, use your heart, if the animal is suffering and trying to pass, do the humaine thing be strong for the animal, it takes a big heart and a strong person do what is in your heart..

i had a chick from ideal poultry and i tried everything she couldnt get the poo out so i finally just pinched her bottom kinda hard and a huge stool passed and it seemed to help things move along a little better i dont suggest doing it but i think that would be better than culling i dont think this is anything that the others can catch a prolaps isnt contagious. best of luck i just think a container to cull it is sad it may go to sleep but its still sufficating it.

well, she just passed away within the last 30 min or so, went in to take a shower and came out and she gone gone.

i'm glad her suffering is over, although i wish i could have saved her.

my other one still hasn't pooped...

I rushed an orphaned kitten I was fostering to the vet because it got really backed up and I was convinced it would die. She squeezed it too.

She then told me to stop stimulating it after it ate because it was just being lazy. Apparently I had spoiled it too much.

th... my other one just took a major turn for the worse! idk what happened, but it was just laying there when i checked on it. not the splayed leg one, this is another one... same breed/parents as the one that died. it can't hold its head up and was laying all twisted when i found it, i think it mighta been trampled by the others? it's laying like it would to sleep, but it's head keeps falling to the side and it's breathing like the other one had been... omg what is wrong with these guys... :'(

Do you have any Poly vi sol without iron? If so, try giving a couple of drops to the newly ill one. I'm not sure what the symptoms were with the one that passed but I am wondering if you have wryneck going on there.

i was just reading about that, but i couldn't find what to do with it? can it be cured? No, i don't right now. and it's 1030pm here so i won't be able to get any until tomorrow. i've been giving it the electrolyte water by syringe and it's drinking that way. since there's 2 from the same parents now that have issues, could there be something genetically wrong with the parents that is causing health problems? the other 2 i have from them are up and running in circles chasing each other over a piece of shavings right now, so they're fine...
