Chick Days are coming at the feed store!

wow, youre going to have a beautiful flock, love all those breeds! The TSC near me said they will have chicks at the end of Feb this year, instead of just before Easter. cool, now to keep my son away from the ducklings!

I order my chicks through our local feed store- they wait until they make up a big enough order and then phone it in. They've been using Mt. Healthy and all the chicks I've gotten (and friends have gotten) have been in great shape. The best part is they let you know when the chicks are expected, then call early that morning to tell you they're in. Most of us get there early and pick up our chicks right out of the shipping boxes. I confess to a weakness for TSC chicks too, but try to avoid buying them if I can. As for the "pullet" bins, I've seen too many kids (and adults) playing with chicks and then putting them back in whatever bin is closest (especially if mom catches them) to trust that they are "pullets" with any accuracy.

edited for bad grammar:)

I just picked up mine this last week. I had to make two runs (for some reason the hatchery decided to ship half of the stores order early); Monday and Friday. I picked up:

1 Silver Spangle Hamburg (Monday)
1 Light Brahma (Monday)
1 Australorp (Friday)
1 Speckled Sussex (Friday)

They're all doing awesome! For the first two though the guy handling the sales just grabbed two and through them in the box. The second to it was a lady and she actually went through and picked out 'the cutest Sussex' for me (she had more yellow on her than any other chicks and is super sweet) and looked around a bit before picking out the Australorp (picked the one that walked up to her; all the others were hiding in the back). I definantly like the second method better but all my chicks are healthy and happy. That's what matters the most, I think...

And the feed store is widening their selections for chicks in the next two weeks too. Every chick they sold was reserved before they even arrived so I think they're having to order some extras just to cover the people who don't order set numbers in advance. Who knew little chicks could cause such a frenzy...

Ameraucanas, probably 2 blue, a splash and 2 Lav. Then I'd like 5 coronation sussex.

Now I have 5 Delawares from Cyn in the brooder. They are 3 wks old.

I'd like BR's from my feedstore in my small rabbit hutch style coop, and maybe a few more girls, Silkies and Marans.

I am obviously getting a nice new big coop!

Our feed store has them already. Last weekend we picked up 5 silkies, 4 leghorns, 2 game hens and an Australorp chick .Last Sunday morning we had a leghorn die, so I went to the store and bought a replacement. When I went back in yesterday for some layer pellets, the kid say's "I was suppose to give you a replacement chick at no cost, we have a 48 hour guarantee on the chicks, so you can get another if you'd like!" I went over and checked the tubs and then told the kid that my wife would kill me if I came home with another chick. So he knocked $2.50 off the bag of feed. Yhe amusing thing about this is that I was headed to the feed store last weekend to get some chicks, wife decided to go with me. She asked me on the ride there how many I was planning on getting. I said about 6 to add to our flock of 8 layers. She told me we didn't need that many, get 2 maybe 4 at the most. We walk in and they have Silkies and she went totally chick nuts., She has wanted to get Silkies since we started our flock 2 years ago. So she picks 5 silkies and then starts droolling over all the "babies", and starts picking chicks out for me. I'm the one who had to put the brakes on her to stop. I now have to build a 'Silkie Coop" for her. I am pleased to see her get the bug, and take an interest in them. She has started to name them all. I need to take her to the feed store more often, maybe I'll get those goats I've been wanting.

Hummm... I need to work on a few things but I'm hoping the bug that bit your DW bites my DH sometime in the next few years. I want a hobby farm. Goats, maybe a little donkey... And chickens. LOTS of chickens...

Our TSC says they'll have baby chicks on the 28th.
I can't wait to see what they have.
First time buying baby chicks; brooder is all ready to go.

We are looking to get Rhode Island Reds (confident that TSC will have them...), but we also want some Silver Laced Wyandottes, and Speckled Sussex (not so sure they will have them though...)

I originally wanted about 6, but we are gradually increasing our number to 8-10. It doesn't help that they require you to get 6 at a time at our TSC.

This will be our first time raising chickens. Our 3-year-old daughter is so excited! Oh-okay! I'm super excited too!

They are coming in next Monday (Feb. 28th)

It's been so hard to narrow it down because my feed store guy is as crazy as we are.
