Hi Luvin - we're not exactly neighbors, but we're in the same state!
When I got my peeps that were shipped at 1 day old, I lost 1 a day for 4 days. I cried with the loss of each. And I felt just awful. I was terrified that within 27 days I'd lose all 27. But the remaining 23 did just fine, and are now almost 6 months old.
I work from home as well, and my poor peeps never got any sleep. Any time I checked on them and found one sleeping, I was certain it was dead. I'd yank them up and put the them in a little chicky intensive care I built so I could keep an eye on them and make sure they weren't dieing. I'd even wake up 3 and 4 times a night and stick sleeping chicks in there to watch and make sure they were ok. Poor things. My husband finally told me that the reason I was catching them sleeping so much was that I was constantly waking them and they were exhausted. He said "You have GOT to let those poor things get some rest!" It wasn't easy - but the truth is, I needed some sleep too!
You're doing fine. And as tempting as it is to run out and get more peeps, I think you've got the right attitude to just make it through these first and then decide. I keep thinking I may want to incubate some eggs and raise the biddies - heaven knows that my two roosters do all they can to insure the eggs are furtile
Maybe next spring......
Take care and best of luck,
Penny
