Chick gasping for air

Gapeworm is a rarer worm. The vet should be able to identify gapeworm larvae in the droppings. In the US fenbendazole is used to treat gapeworm. Flubendazole, albendazole, and levamisole are some of the drugs used around the world to treat it.

Respiratory diseases are more common that gapeworms, so it is hard sometimes to tell the difference. If you see drainage or bubbles in an eye, nasal drainage, or sneezing, those are signs of respiratory infections.

They’re all starting to sneeze now. Must be that respiratory illness again then.
Ill ring to see if I can get the powder this evening. Thanks!

Sorry for your loss, but I am not too surprised since the chick looked very much in distress. Hopefully, you others will improve with the medicine. Is it tylosin or oxytetracycline? Try to get them drinking as much as possible, since sick birds usually do not drink well.
The zerofen 10% dosage should be the same as the dosage of fenbendazole 10% which is 0.25 ml per pound of weight for 5 straight days. Gapeworms canusually be seen inside the windpipe (trachea) as red Y-shaped worms when the trachea is dissected with a sharp knife:

oxytetracycline I think.

I think maybe it would’ve been better if you’d waited 6+ months before hatching from your flock. :hmm

Since it’s already been done - I wish you the best and so sorry for your loss. :hugs

They’ve just recently started showing signs of respiratory illness now, 6 months after the last time.
The vet wouldn’t do a test for respiratory illness so there was no way of me knowing what they actually had. We can only guess.
So I wasn’t going to hold back on breeding them unless I knew exactly what they had, they were only sneezing and it cleared up very fast the first time, they were completely fine after that up until now.

Well I think that means that they were still infected.

Anyhow, good luck!

They could still have gape worm. There’s no way of knowing what they have unless I got one tested and I Can’t seem to find anywhere that will do that.

Anyhow, I wish you the best.
Good luck!

The others are only sneezing, not gasping for air like that one chick was. Just making that clear.
I wasn’t planning on hatching again until summer next year.
I do have 14 two week old chicks in a brooder, but they all seem to be fine.
