Chick has a protruding vent and pasty butt? Help! *PICS*

This seems to be an older post, but I'm a first time chicken owner and one of my week old brahmas has this problem. Since she's happy and eating I've left it alone. What was the outcome? Did the chick grow out of it?

I love how these older posts can help. One of my two week old Silkies has this. It's been driving me nuts trying to figure out what was wrong - it's good to know most of the chicks survived. Ours is eating and pooping and active. Just that pulsating pooper has been driving me nuts! Hope she/he outgrows it soon! I need a happy ending, I love my silkie!

I'm new to raising chick. I wish I knew what to tell you. I had a issue just this morning with one of my chicks This morning I notice my one 4 day old barred Plymouth rock had a pasty butt. I was so nervous about cleaning her up. It was hard to remove so I ran warm water and wiped lightly. While I was cleaning her up she layed in my hand and was so calm and only chirped once. It was like she was saying thanking for making me feel better. My sweet chick is happy and well now.
I hope you can find the answer for your sweet chick.
Thanks Back Yard Chicks!.

So sorry for all the typos on my last post. I will reword my post. I cleaned my one chick from pasty butt. Do I need to apply Vaseline or some type of ointment to her butt?
I was also thinking just check her often to see if it appears again and then apply ointment.

You can apply Vaseline. If the issue is being caused by pasty butt I have found that a wee bit of finely chopped oats (like quick cooking oats) keeps their poop more solid and thus the irritated vent clears up much faster. I just sprinkled some on their chick starter couple times a day. It works fast. Pasty butt can be caused by being too hot or cold so ensure they have enough room to get away from the heat lamp or stay right under it. Whatever their comfort level is. Good luck

Johnsbaby54,
I just wanted to add some advice since your baby is only 4 days old.Try to make sure she is drinking lots! Although pasty butt is almost a given in baby chicks, if they're not getting enough fluids then the pasty but will for sure keep occuring. I'm sure you've already dipped the newbies beaks in their waterer to get them familiarized with drinking but I find that doing this a few times helps them to get the hang of it quicker. I also give them electrolytes/probios in their water for the first week just to give them a healthy start. Hope this helps and enjoy your new babies because they grow entirely too fast!!

Hi everyone! I got three chicks in the mail on wednesday, all a few weeks old. The youngest looking one has what I can only describe as a protruding vent? He's eating and drinking fine, and is very active, but his poo is runny and REALLY light colored and well, his bum looks like this

I don't know what to do. We tried treating it as a prolapsed vent already, we put some Prep H on it and pushed it in, but it just popped back out. When he "goes" it gets stuck in the feathers by his butt and I've had to clean him 2-3 times a day to keep him from getting pasty butt. We did trim the feathers off his bum tonight, and as gross as it is, at least I have to clean him off less. Does anyone have any clue what's wrong with the little guy? Or what I can do to help him? /img/smilies/hmm.png He is eating well, but he's a lot smaller than the other two chicks I got with him. I can't cull him, I simply can't unless he is in complete pain and going to die anyway. He's running around, and acting fine, just has this gross looking vent. Thank you so much for the help!

Hi! I just bought a chick and once I got home I noticed that he/she has a protruding butt as well. So your chick grew up to be fine and normal? No issues? Mine is acting normal. Eats, sleeps, poops okay. I did noticed that the chick would try to get at it's butt. Not sure if it's trying to peck at its own butt or tries to scratch it with it's beak, but it's not able to reach it. So I'm just hoping that he/she makes it.
