One of my 8 day old Barred Rock chicks has a very full crop. It has been this way since about day 3. It is firm to the touch. It seems to feel like it may be full of pine shavings. What would be the best way for me to clear her crop? I was thinking about olive oil and massaging the contents up and out. All help is welcomed.

If the massaging does not work, you may have to cut a small slit in her crop and take the contents yourself. I never had any experience, but read about similar problems with older chickens. The results were always good as long as they got stitched back up and kept clean. Hope she gets better.

Crop surgery is rather easy. There are a lot of experts on her if you search the forum. one thing that doesn't show up is to use super glue to close the crop back up. Someone suggested that to me when we had to do crop surgery a few weeks ago. healed really nicely actually.

My neighbor is an Ophthalmologist and he says he will get all the equipment I would need if necessary. He also said he would do it for me if I wanted. Not bad to have my own personal surgeon on hand. On a side not he is in the process of building a coop for his wife and kids, they are getting 25 day olds on June 1'st.

You are very lucky! Let us know how it turns out.

Well right now she is showing no ill effects. I'm hoping as she gets bigger the small pieces of pine shavings will be able to pass through her system naturally. But I am keeping a very close eye on her and will go ahead and open her up if need be.
