Hi there,

We have got a hen sitting on eggs and our first egg with a pip hasnt started to zip out yet.

Also we found the pip 24hrs ago and the chick is chirping away.

Any advice?

Thanks

First, read through this:

Now, it's time to assist. Whatever you do, go slow, one step at a time. If you notice fresh looking blood veins while taking off bits of shell, stop and rest at least 30 minutes. Then go back for more. What you DON'T want is for the chick to pop out with yolk still needing to be absorbed. But, if the chick is chirping loudly, it's telling you it's ready to come out. However, the hen should know what to do in this case.

Yes, 24 hours is unusual. Typically 12 or less and they are out. I would agree that to save the chick, you will need to help. Go slow, stop at first sign of blood and wait. Start again and don't try to go too fast. It is said that if the chick can't make it out on it's own that it should not be helped out. I have had success and failure. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. It is a good learning experience.

Well the chick in question has zipped its way out and is happily under mumma chook and one other is cheaping away in its egg.

Thankyou guys for your help!

Even when they are ready to zip, it takes some time. They only poke the shell in between all those chirps, and it could take about 30 minutes to fully zip. But yes, they are chirping the ENTIRE time! But they only hit the egg once every few seconds to a few minutes. Then they sit and chirp several times, and then turn a bit, chirp some more, and hit it again.

It sounds like you caught yours when it first started to chirp, before it even struck the egg.
