how big is the yolk sack? i had one that its yolk sack wasnt all the way absorbed just a kind of bump. Left it alone and within a few hours it was up running around everything absorbed and she is almost 3 weeks old now.

Gosh. Just jump right to killing it? That's awful. I've had a few birds that have been stuck to their shells even with big thick umbilical cords and they've made it. Just keep an eye on it, let it rest.. it's going to be pretty tired for a while. I can't answer about the swelling however, it'd be nice if we could see pictures. Sorry I can't be more help.

In the few hours that I asked this question, it has fuzzed up. Now you can't see the internal bubble- but I also think it is coming down, at least a little. I am taking the advice to put it back in the incubator over night- here in the desert it is very dry- and it might be a better environment for it while I am sleeping and can't check in on it. I will update in the morning, if not sooner.

Yea! The chick is still with us this morning... It is more alert, even standing/raised sitting. The swelling has not gone away completely, but it is improved by over half.

Is that correct, she/he can be there in the incubator for up to 3 days without food/water?

It is probably the yolk sack. Like I said in an earlier post, I had one that hatched early and its yolk hadnt all abosrbed but after awhile it did and she is fine. I know some are quick to say cull, but I figure give it some time. Sometimes thats what needs to be done but sometimes a little wait is better. If you are raising for breeding stock I guess its better to cull the weaker birds, but if you are like me just for pets and eggs I give mine time. Obiviously if a bird is very bad and in pain its best to end is suffering but to me thats worst case senario Im gald shes doing better this morning. I would put a lid with some water and a few crumbles of chick starter in there for her to get her going.

I am so happy your baby is doing well.

To "justify" my statement, there were no pics, and I have seen way too many sick chicks suffer.

By the way, not a soul responded to this thread until I did! It was way back on page SIX until I replied.
