chick hatched with almost no down

I have never seen anything like this. This chick is almost naked. Anyone else ever have this experience and know the cause?

I'd watch closely for others picking on all that pink skin! Maybe he/she needs to be warmer than the others with no insulation?

Could be genetic, could be related to incubation conditions or the nutritional status of the parents. Most likely genetic, since the others are all normal.

Other than keeping it warm and watching for it to not get pecked, I think the odds are it will turn out fine. It will be interesting to see what happens when it starts to feather.

I once worked with a woman whose family had a genetic defect, they were all unable to grow hair or nails. She wore wigs and false nails, but her sons didn't. It was a little strange looking, but you got used to it.

I'd say genetic or nutritional, thinking that genetic is the most likely. You may want to ask your question in the chicken genetics discussion area.

Maybe it will grow to be a featherless chicken. Will look like the turken, just naked all over.
