So our most recent chick just hatched right on time, albeit quite slow after a pip on the wrong end. 24+ hours after a LOT of zip progress had been made but MANY hours of inactivity and fewer and fewer peeps and gasps - the boyfriend opted to assist. He simply cracked through the remainder of the shell, a very minimal amount. The chick fought loudly and valliantly and broke out of the shell, only to have a cord and sac coming out of his behind. This is only the third chick of our first hatch and the first two went perfectly, and none of the stuff I can find looks/sounds exactly like what I am seeing.

Trying to decide if/how to help it, or if necessary, the easiest way (on the chick, the boyfriend, and myself) of culling it if that seems totally necessary.

PLEASE amd THANK YOU!

Don't worry about it quite yet. This happens fairly often with my hatches. Let the chick dry out and if it's still attached when the cord is completely dried out, you can take a sterile pair of very sharp scissors and trim it close to the belly, just like a baby human when you "cut the cord"

Like the above poster said, it happens sometimes and it's nothing to worry about. I've had a chick hatch like that just this morning. Leave it and leave the chick in the incubator. The gunk will dry and come off by itself and the navel will seal up and then you can remove the chick from the incubator. Try not to touch it's navel area for the first day.

This happened to my friend also. She was worried sick but she just kept an eye on it and after it dried it fell off and healed,
