This evening I was letting my chicks free range while I watched them since we have 3 cats around here. The chicks are about 2 months old. One of them found a small piece of hard white piece of plastic and was trying to eat it. UGH So I started trying to get it from it and the chase was on.
I finally caught it at the corner of their pen but it rammed into the corner as I reached to get it. There was a wire sticking out (it's the 2x3" welded wire) on the corner and it seemed like the chick was trapped because as I tried to pick it up it didn't come easily. So I was like it's wing is in the wire or something. So I tried lifting it in that area to see how it was hung up and finally just backed up and it came free. Then I noticed a piece of wire sticking out on the pen but the chick wasn't hollering or anything. I checked to see if there was any blood and found none. There wasn't any blood on the wire either. I couldn't really see for all the feathers but wouldn't it been bleeding pretty good if that stuck up in the flesh? Now I am worried because I have 15 RIR's and I don't know WHICH one it was. It wasn't one of the roos. They don't like you picking them up so I try not to handle them a whole lot. But now I am worried about it and have no clue what to put on it IF it did stick into it's flesh.
Decided I would come on here and ask what I could put on it IF it did stick into it's flesh. It wasn't limping or anything so is that a good sign? Oh I am so worried! I bent the wire back around the corner board so hopefully that wont happen again and am going to check the other corners so this wont be happening again.
I stayed out there until they got on their roost and never did see one limping or anything. Will check again bright and early in the morning.
