This evening I was letting my chicks free range while I watched them since we have 3 cats around here. The chicks are about 2 months old. One of them found a small piece of hard white piece of plastic and was trying to eat it. UGH So I started trying to get it from it and the chase was on. :( I finally caught it at the corner of their pen but it rammed into the corner as I reached to get it. There was a wire sticking out (it's the 2x3" welded wire) on the corner and it seemed like the chick was trapped because as I tried to pick it up it didn't come easily. So I was like it's wing is in the wire or something. So I tried lifting it in that area to see how it was hung up and finally just backed up and it came free. Then I noticed a piece of wire sticking out on the pen but the chick wasn't hollering or anything. I checked to see if there was any blood and found none. There wasn't any blood on the wire either. I couldn't really see for all the feathers but wouldn't it been bleeding pretty good if that stuck up in the flesh? Now I am worried because I have 15 RIR's and I don't know WHICH one it was. It wasn't one of the roos. They don't like you picking them up so I try not to handle them a whole lot. But now I am worried about it and have no clue what to put on it IF it did stick into it's flesh.
Decided I would come on here and ask what I could put on it IF it did stick into it's flesh. It wasn't limping or anything so is that a good sign? Oh I am so worried! I bent the wire back around the corner board so hopefully that wont happen again and am going to check the other corners so this wont be happening again.
I stayed out there until they got on their roost and never did see one limping or anything. Will check again bright and early in the morning.

Of a chicken gets a flesh wound you can gently wash the area. I use warm water and a gentle baby shampoo. Dry the area thoroughly and apply an antibiotic cream like neosporin. Don't use anything that ends in "Caine." From my understanding that is toxic to chickens. You can also use Blu-Kote, it's an antiseptic and anti fungal. I used the neosporin before I was able to get to the feed store and purchase the blu-kote. Use gloves if you use the blu-kote. It will stain you purple! :) if the wounds on a chicken are bad you usually need to seperate them so other chickens won't peck at the wounded chicken.

Thank you Mercy me! I went out there this morning at 7:30 to check on them and no ones limping. Was so worried the more I thought about it. Just got back from checking again and still they all are fine. None sitting around or limping so am soooo thankful it didn't pierce the skin! shoooo What bothered me was when I put it down it went limp on that side and when I tried to get it again it got up and ran off. So I was like, well maybe it did get into it's skin. ????? Anyway I am saving this info for later use and I sure appreciate you answering!! I am going to get me some blu-kote to have on hand and will stick me some throw away gloves in the same ziplock with it so I will remember. lol I also thought about letting it stand in some epsom salts water but then thought, what IF it tries to drink it? Don't know if it would hurt a 2 month old chick to drink it or not.

Wanted to come back on here and say it must not have stuck into it's flesh because I have really watched all the RIR's for the past several days as well as several times a day and all is well and no hopping or anything. So I am so thankful it's ok!
