Chickenslol
Songster
I wanted to start a thread to journal how my chicks are doing. I’m thrilled because they will be available sometime this week!
A little bit of background on my current flock
Started with
2x RIR(one deceased)
2x Black australorps
2x barred rocks (deceased)
i unfortunately lost the two BR to hawks, and later that day went to tractor supply and picked up….
3x golden comets(2 deceased)
2x golden laced wyandottes(one deceased ,the other was male and rehomed later that year)
1x light brown leghorn
This past year has been a rough one for my chickens and when i started out with ten in Jan 2021, i am now at five, four of which are deceased due to ongoing illnesses.
I was determined to start over (and never go to tractor supply again) I started looking for new places to buy chicks. I wanted them sooner than later, so i was worried about shipping chicks in from somewhere else, I live in MA and I dont think my heart could handle the possibility of a box of dead chicks
. I searched far and wide, and finally found Brooke Koopscoops, in RI. I placed my order for the following
2x Lavender orp
2x Speckled Sussex
2x Barred rocks
Total came out to 50$, all vaccinated, 90% chance of girls
I’m so excited, but i still have some important things to do
1. I need to take the heat lamp out of the coop, easier said than done because the lamp is bolted to the walls (also before you panic it has a regular bulb and we only use it to see inside the coop at night, the heat bulb is indoors)
2. Get chick grit and other nutrients, TS was understocked, what a shocker!
3. Set up brooder upstairs, i would have put them in the living room near the door, but people come and go from our house, so it has to be upstairs next to my room (no complaints i love chicks sooooo much and I’d rather they be close so i can be on hand in case of emergency)
4. Get a date to pickup, according to the breeder it should be anywhere from Feb 2-4, And as soon as we get an email we will be driving down to get them
my only concern is ther the drive is an hour and a half to RI, and while im not super concerned, i am a little worried about that long with no heat especially in temps like this.
Ill keep you updated, if anyone has any advice LMK, I’m not new to raising chicks but it’s been a while, so I’m open to it.
