Chick Math, Again!!!!!

I built a coop that would hold 6, max. I bought eight cause you know at least one would die and another could be a rooster and and and.. Hmm. None died and I don't think any are roosters.

So now we are building coop #2 cause hubby wants guineas and I wanted some more 'interesting' breeds so 5 more chickens and 15 guineas on the way. Did I mention that there is no way coop #2 will hold 20 birds?

(guineas will free range on our 26 acres, I hope!)...

/sigh.

Oh, and I have 33 guinea eggs in an incubator. I am sure none of them will hatch but if they do......................

I hear ya! I am not even supposed to have chickens but really wanted to have a few that supplied us with fresh healthy eggs. Went to the store with 3 total in mind...left with 6. I figured we would get a roo or two and some might die. All are pullets and all survived.

Getting close to egg time. I just caught myself on autopilot about to order 6 more online. Ahhh..... I need to wait on increasing my flock diversity until we move next year to a LEGAL chicken keeping plot of land....BUT it is so HARD! This site definitely doesn't help keep us reigned in either with all the variety we get to see.

Chicken Math!

Its funny how that happens. I was going to order 6 but the hatchery informed me I must have 15 at least so I upped it to 15 and they threw in a peanut making it 16. Was going to order fifteen more including a couple turkeys and ended up ordering 30 total. Chicken Math is tough.

I feel your pain.

I planned for six, and less than a year later have 18 (after re-homing two roosters). There is a chicken-y vortex or wormhole in space, or something. . . right, rocket scientist? That's what I'm blaming it on. Yep. Tha's exactly what happened.

I started by going to atwoods saw a few chicks and some cute ducks. bought the ducks because i knew some chinese who wanted them. then decided some meat and eggs around the farm would be a nice addition so i bought 5 BA 5 RiR's went back for feed bought 20 assorted pullets. while I was there waiting on help i noticed a catalog sitting on the counter it said Ideal poultry So i quickly put the number in my phone. Long story short Now i have 350 birds 25 bird arrive a week and I am Okarches first Chicken farm LOL so much for fried chicken.

I don't like math, it makes my head hurt and sometimes I even have to count on my fingers....BUT this Chicken Math is great stuff! I'm getting REALLY good at it! Originally, I was going to get 5 chickens. 5 turned into 10 when my ex -husbands girlfriend was interested in having fresh eggs, but she didn't have a place to put chickens. I ordered 10 from MPC and got 6 packing peanuts. 3 died and now I'm up to 13. Thirteen is such an unlucky number, dont'cha think? Perhaps I need a few more...

23 chickens = 2x3 chickens
(2x3) = 6
6=6
There you go! I just love it when the math works out!

Hmmm... I wanted 10. I got 10. But we lost one. She wandered off last night and hasn't come home. Now I only have 9. I wanted 10. Where's my calculator?

Thank goodness my DH supports and indulges my chicken math.

We agreed on a FEW chickens

Started with 11, 1 died, got one to replace it. so far so good.

Lost another one, no replacement. Still good.

Bought 5 Columbian Wynadottes because they are pretty

Thanks to BYC had to build an incubator, that means 9 more. And had to go to TSC and buy 4 silkies and a polish. Thanks again BYC

Two hens went broody=14

Got a gorgeous roo from a friend. He is vaccinated for Mareks and I need that

Lost 5 to Mareks

few = 11-1+1-1+5+9+4+1+14+1-5= 39

oh oh. I need a bigger coop, thank goodness it is summer and they can free range all day.

Goat math works the same too

3= 13

These are cracking me up! I posted my equation on another thread, but here it goes again:

Bought three little chicks at the pet store, let my son and BF's two girls each pick one out. I had researched the breeds to make sure they were ones we wanted - got a PR, a BR, and an "ameraucana" = 3;
"Ameraucana" turned out to be a leghorn, which of course we must keep because my son picked her out, and she will lay lots of eggs, even if she's crazy - -1 = 2 so far;
Went to get a FMBC from a lady who also had two gorgeous EE's that were side by side all day and I couldn't bear to split them up, so they counted as one, so +2= 4;
Both EE's were roo's, given away - 2 = 4 again
BF went to feed store and saw "ameraucanas", knew I didn't have my pretty egg layer, bought one: +1 = 5
"Ameraucana" is, of course and EE, so still doesn't count (plus she was a gift) - 1 = 4 again!
Take roo's to swap to give away, and EE baby is lonely, so buy Olive egger to keep her company. Not for me, for the EE, so doesn't count +0 = still 4.
Waiting on an ACTUAL Ameraucana from a guy that has a egg-hatching addiction, technically she will be a rescue, so doesn't count - +0 = 4!
I'm allowed 5 in the city, so what should I get next? The BF is catching the chicken bug now, and wants a Blue Copper Marans......hmmm..... Someone else is giving away Key West Gypsies...... those Columbian Rocks are cool...... choices, choices, choices.......
