chick names!!

I really did get alot of great info from her and my gpa. that is the only way I can do what I am doing now.I got my love of animals from my gma she was gentle but tough when she needed to be, she inspired me.
There is no way I could cull healthy birds.. Just bwcause they are not perfect they get to die.. I guess that is the animal nut in me. I know its been done that way for years but to me it is like having a bunch of children and when one of them acts up or doesnt make the best of grades we will just cull them and start over... oh it killsme..

I just cant, I am a tough woman and rule with an iron fist but am gentle when I need to be but I see my animals as my other children and just couldnt do it... No way!!

I am excited about him being a buff columbian, not many people breed those andI think they are pretty, he will make nice babies with the milles.

So cant wait!!!

thats exactly the way i look at it i let all my chickens live out their lives to the fullest i have a 9 yr old hen who is the bully of all my standard chickens even gets into a fight with the roos every now and then she has pretty big spurs to strange for a hen though i could never kill a healthy creature just cuz it has some flaws i was going to go gethens from a local chicken farm just to save them but couldnt after i thought that id bring all of them home lpus the gps didnt want anything to do with bringing me there he is a real nice looking rooster despite having a couple flaws

I think so. I am sure the chicks will come out great..
I also am letting mine live their full lives, I dont like the idea of culling after a few years just because a hen is slowing in production. She still has a life and I am not who says when her life shouldend. I will be breeding so I will always have new hens starting up as the older ladies are slowing down. Yea that means my operation is going to grow and I will have more and more chickens and turkeys,, but that is what happens when you deal with poultry.. I think my roo being a buff columbian and from hatchery stock and being 21wks the flaws are minimal, the color will come in the only thing you cant fix, which may be because he is from a hatchery, is the fact that he doesnt have falcon hocks and has a smaller amount of feathering on the toes were my girls have TONS! It will turn out nice, those will be th ehardest to let go of because they are my favs. Their names__ Roo- Red. Hens- (the one with most spangles) Sunshine, ( least spangles) Katana

Ha my flocks growing to i just gave into the silkie and the millie gave the silkie 3 and the millie 2 i think there all silkie but there might be some millie eggs also so wont be surprised if i have a couple of millie chicks hatching how many chickens/turkeys do u have i started off with 10 layers and a rooster and now have 70 something chickens r addicting i just love my chickens i would make them a cake everyday to show how much i do but i would have some fat chickens:lol:

I have 17 chickens and 5 turkey. I have a mixed breed group and love them all. They are so addicting that is for sure. They are like my little children, When I go out to the coop (that is were I spend 75% of my day) they all run up to great me begging for treats. Usually the turkeys get to me first, they are treat hogs lol. I cant imagine not having them at all. They have pulled me out of depression and give me something to do and focus on. I have baked for them, I made a homemade flock block and they loved it

I appreciate them so much and they will live out their whole lives with me.

ha that 22 will turn in to 60 by the time u get broodies and a bator theyll keep multiplying if u r gonna be weak likei was and give into the broodies:lol: i want to get peacocks another intresting bird is a guinea they're kind of strange they r a nice additon to the flock out of the 8 i have only 2 that will let u snuggle and hug them the others only let u look at them they r just full of themselves he he he;)

Yes I agree it is going to expand quickly next spring for sure. It already expanded when I originally got mine. I got 7, then a week later 4 then another turkey and so on until my last addition for the year a tri color turkey hen named storm.. I am building a larger coop next season with tax money and am going to put a brooding area in. I love peacocks I would love to have some. I have considered getting some guineas for flock protection I need to do alittle more research on housing and raising and such, but I have heard good things about them and also the same as you say that not too many of them want to socalize. Think I am just going to expand and breed my turkeys and chickens for now. I am busy debating on what combos to set up. A guy down the road said he just lets the roos pick unless he is breediing to get a certain kind for someone who has asked for it.

do u know anything about chicken legs and feet my blue d'uccle rooster dosent want to walk on his one leg/foot he can move it his foot dosemt look bad just looks as nice a foot as he could ask for and ever sice his comb started to darken near the points first time this has ever happened maybe he hurt it when he fell off the roost last night?:/

Oh poor roo. Have you checked the bottom of his foot? All I know about the comb darkening is if it is purple it can mean that oxygen is being rushed to other areas so that portion turns purple kind of like when the circulation gets cut off to something temporarily. Perfectly normal though, the larger the comb the easier it is to happen. I would check to see if there are any cuts on the bottom of his foot and if no cut then maybehe did hurt it coming off roost. My turkeys are getting big and heavy and I always worry that they are going to hurt themselves coming down because they roost about 5 ft in the air. I need to develope a ramp or something for them to use.

he has no cuts or anything like it but his comb is pretty big he dosent have a dark color anymore i just hope he gets better my old hen that i talked about is probably not gonna make it much longer but it makes me feel good that she had such a long life and was never treated bad so she was probaly very happy i dont want lose one that has not lived as long as it could he so sweet to:(
