I need some help. I have a hatch of 13 chicks that are 7 weeks old. I lost 1 Faverolle chick last week for no apparent reason, she stopped eating and lost condition rapidly and died within 2 days. This morning I noticed one of the Salmon Faverolle pullets is not eating or drinking and is just fluffed up sitting on top of a bale of hay. The hatch have been outside and off heat for 2 weeks and the rest of the chicks are all ok. I've checked to make sure their are no mites and added some ACV to their water. I'm still pretty new at chick raising so need some advice on what the problem could be.

Cocci is the first thing that comes to my mind. Back in July 2017 I adopted 11 chicks. I also had 2 favorelle. One died suddenly in the night and the next day I had 2 other chicks that wouldn't eat or drink and just sat down under the heat source. I treated my chicks witth corid. Within 2 days I seen improvement. However one chick had gone to far and I had to cull. If it's cocci it takes over fast and it needs to be treated ASAP. Corid is found at tractor supply and many feed stores. I used the powder and put it in the water. I was able to save 9 of my 11 chicks. If they won't drink you will have to help them do so. I also put the powder in their chick food to help them." Save a chick" can also help. I added it and the corid to the water. Hope this helps I'm not an expert but I did have to go thru this over the summer. I believe "twocrows"on byc helped me last year with dosage and advice you should check them out. They are very knowledgeable and experienced. Good luck.

Thank you so much. It's sounds exactly like what's going on. I'm on my way out to get some medication now. I'll keep you posted on how things go

Here's an update on my chicks. It's now 5 days since I started the meditation and all chicks (even the sick one) are doing really well. I separated the sick one for 24 hours so she had uninterrupted access to food and water, overnight she picked up a lot so put her back with the others the next day. By then a Faverolle cockerel was looking sick so did the same with him with the same results. No other chicks have shown any sign of illness so I think I got onto it just in time. Thank you again so much for your quick help - my chicks appreciate it very much

In the UK, we can get chick crumb with an anti-coccidiostat in it. Is this not available in the States?
We have a chick crumb called medicated chick starter but it doesn't always prevent the cocci outbreak in my experience. The chicks I had over the summer were fed that before I adopted them and they still became ill with cocci and needed corid treatment.

That's fantastic news! I'm so glad things cleared up for them! I went thru this and BYC saved my chicks as well. I didn't know what to do for them or what was going on. You can always count on BYC to save the day! By day 7 things should be really well with them. I'm glad u were able to catch it in time! Cocci moves fast and I learned that and will never forget.
