Chick Not Feathering

Yes, but don't most hatcheries hatch on Mondays? I got mine on a Sunday, so that would be almost a week by then.

The only straight run section they had were for the cornish rocks. I would have gotten BO's instead of this RIR, but they weren't labelled hens(but they weren't labelled straight run, either) I should have asked.

However, I am getting fond of this little chick.

Hatch days vary by hatchery. McMurray, where the feed store got mine, seems to have two different hatch days. The Feed Store recieved half their order on a Monday (Hatched on Friday?) and half on Friday (Hatched Wednesday?). Best way to know would have been to ask the clerks at the time when the chicks arrived. Now though... That being said, chicks seem to be flying off the proverbial shelves right now so I doubt the little one was more than three or four days old when you got him/her.

Actually...there weren't many people there when we were there that Sunday afternoon, but that may be related to the somewhat rainy weather we had been having on and off. There was only one other lady purchasing chicks. I think most hatcheries would stay away from hatching on Friday because they don't ship on Sundays, so that would mean an extra day in shipping for the chicks.

I got mine from TSC. They got them from Townline. My stumpy seemed like she wasn't feathering out at all either. She had no tail feathers at all when the others had all theirs already. Her tail is still short compared to the others. But she has a tiny comb and thinner legs than the biggest chick of the bunch.

Grr. This chick seems to have a comb similar in size to my BR, who has more wing feathers and is starting to grow a tail. Let's hope they're the same age, shall we? EDIT: Nope. Looked again, it's smaller.

I looked today and it has little pins on the base of its wings.

Another question, tummy is...grey.

The vent is pink, but below that it is a darkish grey color. The beak, legs, and skin around the wings are pink. The grey extends to the belly underneath the fuzz...just a conky skin or what?

A lot depends on what your feed them.

I got a blue orp, silkies and a cross and five RIR that I hatched out. the RIR's have barely a tail. All of them. I'm certain they aren't all roos.

If you have more than one, they may fight. If your neighbors don't like noise, roosters are a terrible idea. They are also outlawed in some cities. And if you're not supposed to have chickens in the first place, a rooster crowing would tip everyone off.

I will keep you guys posted on how this one does.

You can expect it...
