Chick pecked by other chicks. Has a small wound on its beak.

Hi! I very recently got 11 chicks. Mainly pet breeds. They are under a week old. Today I found one of my chicks with a small wound on its beak and the other chicks pecking at it. I have separated the wounded chick with its own brooder plate, food and water. What else can I do for the chick? Can I put antibiotic ointment on her? Also how long should I leave her separated from the other chicks? I’m very new to chicken keeping so while I’ve heard of this problem before I’m not very sure what to do.

She should be fine. Usually I poke the bullies on the beak to try and "correct" that behavior. It works for the most part for me.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Chickens are attracted to the color red, which means the chicks will continue to peck at that beak as long as they see the blood. Triple antibiotic ointment may stop the problem. If not, you can apply a tiny dab of blu-kote on the beak, and that should stop the pecking problem.
