Chick pooping blood

Thank you for your help about coccidiosis. The sulmet seemed to help much quicker. I lost 7 of 17 chicks, only 2 after starting Sulmet. I have never had this disease before and will sure taken precautions for it not to happen again.

After putting my two barred rocks to bed last night with no problems, I woke up to find that one or both of them were pooping blood. Like, a lot. I read this thread right away, and so I bought some Corid and started mixing it into their water this afternoon. The trouble is, they dont seem to be drinking much water, and I'm worried they aren't getting enough medicine. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice on getting them to drink? These barred rocks are so sweet, it would be awful if we lost them. Thanks!

Valentinehill, you may need to syringe feed them or even tube feed them. I haven't done the tube feeding, but there are threads explaining how. You can also dip their beaks, and they will swallow.

Thanks. We dipped their beaks when we put them back in their cleaned cage, and they drank right away. But I'm worried that they aren't drinking enough. How much should they be drinking to get better?

you might add some electrolytes powder with it so they stay hydrated and it may improve the flovor. Also, you may have to dropper feed them some medicated water until they feel better and desire to drink again. Hope it helps I love my Barr's too they are the sweetest of all my babies.

Thanks for the advice. Two days on now, and they are both still alive and the blood is out of their stool. I'm following the five day Corid schedule so in a couple more days I'll try adding electrolytes. Emergency averted!

Awesome, fluids and meds r the key. speed of starting treatment is the most crucial. Sounds like you caught it in time congrats. Good luck with those 2 babies.

I have 6 chicks in a crate in my coop with my 6 layers. I saw a little bit of blood today in some poop in the crate, so to be on the safe side I'm going to buy the corid that's been recommended. Should I be treating my layers since they're all living under the same roof? The layers are about a year old.....

I would give all your birds a course of Corid, if only to be on the safe side. If they are living in the same space, in the same conditions, there's a good chance all of the birds have been exposed. Have you picked some Corid up yet?

After the heavy rain we had here this weekend, several of our birds (4 months old) are passing bloody stool. Hubby is on his way to TSC to get corid and medicated peep food. I think I understand from these posts that we need to reintroduce good bacteria after they finish 5 days of treatment for the coccidia? Is there something we should put on the ground of their run to kill the coccidia there? Thank you for your help - we have had chickens on and off for years but never had this problem - after building a brand new chicken house and run for the current flock, the only thing I can think of causing this is the heavy rains (I admit - yard was a MESS - of course, EVERYTHING was a mess :) )
