Hi everyone, I’m new to the forum. I recently bought 3 lohman brown chicks from a reputable breeder, and I’ve put them in a old aquarium of mine with pine shavings and a hot lamp. However, one of them is non stop cheeping unless I hold it, and when I first got it it was a bit confused. It is eating and drinking well, but it’s eyes are half closed and it’s constantly cheeping. This is my first time buying chicks. Any help is greatly appreciated.

first id make sure the brooder is at the correct temp. i recommend using a brooder, instead of a heat lamp! (but find some more info on this)
it probably is also lonely, thats why it wants you to hold it! i normally get way more than 3 chicks, so i dont have any experience with this? but i know a actual brooder that they can go under kind of feels like a mother hen, and makes them feel safe.
also keep watch for signs its sick like, not normal poop, not eating or drinking, ETC.

I actually live in Malaysia, and the average temperature is around 30C. The heat lamp is just to provide extra heat if they want it. I’ll look into getting a brooder in future. Other than the excessive cheeping and closed eyes, it is doing fine. I’ll update tomorrow.

maybe try to get something :) 🐔 for them to go under then!!

Remove the heat lamp it’s too hot for that tank. 30C is 86F which is perfectly fine for new chicks and with a heat lamp that aquarium is easily over 100F which can kill chicks. I use a heat plate now, but when I was using a lamp I kept it in the 85-90F range for freshly hatched chicks. The 95F recommendation you see everywhere I find way too hot and why people tend to see pasty butt issues.

Ok I’ve removed the heat lamp and given them a hot water bottle instead. I think it might have been too hot/too bright. They are snuggling up to the warmth and sleeping. The chick is no longer chirping loudly, so I’ll update tomorrow. Thanks for all the help! I really appreciate it.

good morning everyone. Just checked on the chick, and it still cheeps rapidly every now and then. It has been drinking a lot of water, and its crop didn’t empty overnight, so I think there is a blockage. What can I do to help it clear its crop?

Is food in there overnight? If yes then I would expect to see a full crop even in the morning.

Do they have access to chick grit? A tiny sprinkle on the food once every few days is enough.

Get a heat plate inside. And don't use shavings if they eat it they will become impacted. If you do use shavings use big ones instead of the little fluffy ones.
