Chick sitting on it's butt? Helps pls

Hi,

I have a chick who was born yesterday evening so now a day old. He keeps flipping on his back and can't stand up, when I lightly hold him up he sits on his butt and like kicks himself backwards. Legs are not splayed to the sides but he cannot get himself on balance on his feet.

Taping the legs doesn't help as the legs are not splayed to sides :/

Try dissolving some vitamin B complex and E into some water and dosing the chicks twice a day. Sometimes these types of leg problems are caused by vitamin deficiencies.

Sorry you are having trouble.

I agree with azygous! You may need to support the chick and drip the solution on the beak just under the nostril and the chick will gobble and swallow when it rolls into their mouth.

Do you have poultry nutridrench or some other Sav a chick type product with vitamins and electrolytes?

I would not worry about feed right now, liquids are important. But if you don't have some sort of supplement I would rush out and get one. Once it's like this, electrolytes are not usually enough to help. Unless you have baby vitamins with NO iron on hand... Poly Vi Sol is one name that has the important B's, some others do not.

When I wasn't able to get another product I just bought bird vitamins (at Wally) to add in my water (for shipped chicks suffering the same symptoms you describe, maybe like star gazing is what it's called). You can't OD them on vitamins, the extra will be processed out. I give a drop full strength on the beak. Electrolytes are things like salt and potassium and those can be OD'ed on so follow the directions with them.

No, unfortunately hobby breeding of poultry is not so common in my country I am aware of the vitamins & electrolytes meant to chickens but I have to order from eBay or somewhere similar. Stupid me that I haven't done it beforehand.

I have A-D-E-vitamin liquid (would A and D do any harm in this case?) for animals and B-vitamin pills for humans, I'll start with those. Thanks so much

My flock gets the ADE-vitamin weekly but obviously not enough then if the poor chick is lacking vitamins right from hatch

Ah, I see now you are in Finland!

I doubt the vitamins will cause harm.

Don't beat yourself up for not having something specific on hand before you started. We all get excited and start our learning journey! And experience is the mother of all teachers, so you may be better prepared next time.

the little one is up on his feet already

I gave him b-vitamin pill and just a drop of ADE-vitamin mixed in water, and also a little bit of running egg yolk, both from a syringe dropped to side of his beak.

He is still bit wobbly and when he is resting he likes to sit on his butt, but now he is able to walk and not only slide backwards.

Thanks SO MUCH for the advice! Now next thing to do is to surf to eBay for electrolytes and baby chick vitamins!


He is that blue pekin chick in the photo, all up and running <3 (other chick has normal feet, toe looks curled because nail was stuck on the cloth)

My bad. I did not look at your location. Glad that your chick is doing better. Liver is high in B vitamins.
