We have spent the morning rounding up my “wild” mama and 11 six week old chicks. The goal is to train her to a coop so she goes in at night and is protected and warm. After much chasing, netting and chaos we have mama and 10 in a cage and the last chick is trapped under one of my smaller coops. We’ve tried scaring it out with a stick into a net but even when it was poked (gently) with a sick through a small hole, it’s not moving.

My husband was wondering if smoking it out could work, I have a bee smoker we could use, but we are afraid it would just sit there and breathe in smoke. Aside from ripping up the floor which I really don’t want to do, I can’t think how to lure it out. Any ideas?

Working on pics now

Maybe put food out for it and it'll come out. Canned cat food or something like that.

Do you have a dog crate or something that you can put all of them in, in front of where the chick is stuck? Maybe seeing it's Mom and the other chicks, it will come out. I don't think it will come out if you guys are standing there because it's probably afraid.

I wouldn't smoke it out, that would be bad for it's lungs and overall healthy. Can you post pics of where it is so we can see the actual situation and where the chick is then we can get better ideas how to lure it out.

No smoking. Can you leave the cage with Mama and the chicks a few feet from the coop, and have everyone leave? Then very calmly sit near the cage and wait for the baby to come close to the cage? The peeping of the others should help it to come outside.

The cage has big holes in the bottom, tried to slide card board but it pinched feet and caused panic among the ones in the cage.

We tried leaving the coop open to lure the chick to a caged mama but they didn’t go for it. Now all my other chickens are gathered around clucking at me.
