I just got my first flock of day olds, 4 days ago. They are getting chick food, but I would like to start offering treats as rewards for socializing with me. When can I start offering my chicks treats and what are good, healthy treats for them?

Hi I use wood lice from the garden as they love cha sing them round and there are a great treat for them . But I also just put my chicks in the garden as they find there own treats . I hope thus helped :D

I put about 2 cups of clean dirt on their brooder floor. They love to scratch around in it. Also can take small cup of their regular dry food and add water or water & drop or 2 cider vinegar to make a mash, consistency of hot cereal. I give to my chicks and hens at end of the day to establish feeding routine they look forward to.
But every one loves mealworns, so once in a while I crush up a few for them to scratch up. They may even take them from your fingers if you hold one out. Babies instinctively will pick food offered like they would from the mama.

Mealworms always seem to be a hit with chicks. Best to offer them sparingly, and crumble them up while the chicks are small, and to offer grit to help them digest their treat.

I started giving my chicks scrambled eggs at around 1 week. Just mash them up really fine. I just put a few pinches in my hand and say "chick chick chick." After they figure out what it is they eat it like little hungry piranhas. After just a couple of times doing this they will come running any time you yell "chick chick chick" (or whatever you choose to say.)

I've been able to train my 2 youngest with this same method since they were 2 days old! I think they're wired to expect certain chirps from momma to let them know there's food nearby. They usually gently attack my hand, its very cute

I started giving my chicks small crickets from the pet store, when they were a little over a week old. And chick grit! They go NUTS chasing them around! Haven’t had any problems.

I chop up the ends of tomatoes and toss them in the coop to our chicks. Dried mealworms and weeds from the yard (learned that on the forum) leaving the dirt on the roots. They love both. Told on the forum that grit was not needed for these.
