So, before I use to find some chicks dead on their backs in the brooder and I thought it was cuz it was too cold. I never knew why. But now I do!!! This is how they end up on their backs, sometimes they can't get up and I have to help them back on their feet. So I have to watch them 24hrs.

Just thought some of you would like to see a chick flip.

Sorry for your losses but I never saw mine just flop over like that. The occasional tumble when they were running or trying to jump on something but they never had trouble getting back on their feet. You might have something else going on.

Ditto. The one with its backside to the camera looks to have pasty butt also.

yeah, they always have pasty butts. I have too clean it every few hours. Its like have kids!!! :(

They try to scratch their backs or wing feathers, but their necks are too short and they just tumble over. They run around and go crazy with really loud chirps until they have an itchy back. Then its flipping time. :)

I've lost a couple to this too, but I had bedding in there and I think it prevented them from being able to right themselves. Then there was another that got dangerously close to dying from it because it fell on its back right under the heat lamp. Luckily I went out to check on them, saw I had a nearly dead chick, flipped it over in my hand and it was fine except for the fact that it was panting like crazy. I've always wondered how they get themselves into that predicament.

That is not normal at all. Your chicks are sick. They are not dying because they fall on their backs, they dying because they are sick. They have pasty butt also which can kill them.

A healthy chick will easily be able to get back on its feet if it fall on its back. Yours are probably weak from sickness. Can you take them to the vet? Are you keeping them warm enough? Maybe the food is not fresh or not right for them.

I hope you don't loose any more chicks.

Its so sad for you.

I am sorry.

I thought they were sick too, but the guy from NPIP came a couple of months ago and said all of the chicks seemed healthy and my flocks looks to be doing great. Got my results a couple of days ago and it looks all good

I told him and he said it was weird too. Thought it might be because they are bantams with really short wings.

Oh and in the Video they look like they have pasty butts... but I had cut some of the fluff off from their butts and its just bare skin in the video (for the white one) the brown one still has a pasty butt. I have cut the little feathers for the brown one too now. So he doesnt seem to have a pasty butt anymore.

Once they hit 2 weeks, They can official get themselves up. But for now. its a 24hr watch!

1 more week to go. They just roll over now! Seems like they are learning that they must be careful about scratching their backs.
