Here's a couple of pics of a chick waterer I made using a Farmtek poultry nipple and a Ziploc screw-top food container. I used the nipple that has a rubber seal on it. The Farmtek catalog says to use an 11/32" drill. The plastic on the container is brittle, so I had to start with a very small drill (1/16") and work my way up. You put the rubber seal in the hole, then insert the nipple into the seal. Use a little water to make it slip in the seal easier. I then drilled a couple of holes in the lid and zip-tied it to the top of my brooder (on the inside, of course). I filled the container with fresh water, screwed it onto the lid and presto! No more poop or litter in the water!
It took the chicks less than 10 seconds to start pecking at the nipple, and about half a minute to start actually drinking from it. There's a board under it so they have an easier time reaching it. So far, the nipple doesn't leak at all. But there will be a stray drip or two when they've been pecking at it for a while. It's not enough to worry about, and it just makes a little wet spot on the board under the drinker.
Please IM me if you have any questions about this.
