Chick with a lump under her beak. What to do?

Good job!

I'd let the lance spot scab up then try some epsom salt compresses on it... see if it draws the rest towards the scab then reopen and clear it out again... jmo... :)

Smart girl knows you're trying to help... :)

Epsom salts are great... I did see a bottle of gel epsom salts in the horse section at Tractor Supply the other day, specifically for easy compresses, but it's like $20...

I re-opened the scabbed over incision and used warm epsom salts compresses for about 30 minutes. Nothing! No blood, nothing, not even with suctioning with the TB syringe. Cu-tips up in the pocket did not have any exudate on them today and NO BLOOD. Really strange. Anyway, I used a cu-tip dipped in oxine solution and then beta dine to sponge around inside of the pocket. She tolerated it like it was nothing and then I fed her more pureed chick starter and oxytetracycline. The pocket is no larger or smaller and no softer or harder. I am stumped. The entire end of a cu-tip fits up in the opening. I finished up by putting neosporin on the exterior area. Her condition seems unchanged.

I first noticed this 3 days ago. It is larger now than this picture which was taken 2 days ago. Today she has developed some white patches inside her mouth that weren't there yesterday. She is still eating, drinking and acting normally. She is broody reared and free ranges all day. The lump is firm. It seems too hard to lance. There is nothing in her mouth or under her tongue.

Hi, sorry this is many years later but I have a chicken with what appears to be the exact issue as yours. I was wondering how things ended up with your chicken and if you did anything more/found out anything else about her condition? Thanks.

This thread is very old, you aren’t likely to get a response from the op. I suggest you post a separate thread for your hen, you’ll get more help that way. 🙂
