Chick with a Prolapsed Vent

Thanks, I have been looking through threads and didn't see any answers as to how long it takes either. We didn't have any Preparation H, but do have cortisone cream which was also recommended by several people so we are trying that. Hope Preppy heals quickly!
Yeah, hope yours gets better too. I tried getting a more specific answer for timeframe and this is what I got:

So, 3-ish weeks? Preppy just went on her 2nd week, so hopefully she’s in the home stretch and never has this happen again...

I Experienced a similar situation two years ago when I mailed ordered hatchery chicks. I learned that stress contributes to pasty butt which contributes to prolapse and two of them went through a very similar situation as what you’ve described. Another stressor would be they're not warm enough in the brooder, you can usually tell this if they’re piled all together under the heat source.

I had to give regular butt cleanings and I use preparation H as well and it took about a month or more before they stopped prolapsing. I also learned about witch hazel pads and used a few of those that were given to me but most of the treatments were preparation H. I also worried about prolapsing once they started laying and thankfully that did not happen. But knowing this was a possibility I kept a close eye on them and regularly inspected.

I hope this helps give an idea about how long it will take to heal. Keep at it you’re doing a good job!

I try to keep her clean with some baby wipes or cleaning her butt off with warm water and then I put prep H on it. She’s 5 weeks old now and some of it’s still prolapsed, but it’s not near as bad as it was. There’s actually only a little bit that still sticks out, but it’s really not noticeable unless you know what to look for and I was able to put her back in with her buddies a while back.

I’ll try getting pictures of her soon.
