Chick with abscess?

As a newbie, it is so easy to panic about the least little thing that looks amiss. We have all been there, so don't worry about it. Just thankful you didn't try to lance it before posting a query on the forum....that would have been the time to feel dumb!

It really is a common question/concern here on the forum, so you are not alone in thinking the chick had a problem.

As regards grit, as junebuggena has already indicated, grit is only needed if you are feeding them something that needs grinding down. Their crumbles mix with the water they drink (if you don't already feed it as a mash or fermented), so it becomes a soft mush in their upper digestive tract and doesn't need any further breaking down in order tp pass through their system. Pretty much everything else you might feed them (grains, greens etc) needs "chewing" which is essentially what the grit is for since chickens don't have teeth. The grit passes into the gizzard which is a strong muscular pouch, with the food and the muscles contract to grind the grains etc and grit together until the food is macerated. The grit is retained in the gizzard until itself gets ground down and becomes small enough to pass into the intestines and is eventually eliminated. More grit is eaten as required to replace whatever breaks down.
