chick with leaky eye

2 and a half months. Silkie. Been leaky since day 1. I use terrymacin and saline wash. What is this?

Do you see any other symptoms such as nasal drainage, sneezing, or noisy breathing? What type of bedding do you use?

No and it was pine chips but now it is hay. I keep her environment very clean. I clean it daily. Without chemicals.

It MAY be something that it is a lifelong ailment. I have a rooster that is a RIR mix. He had a leaky eye as a chick. I treated it daily at first and I handle him frequently but now as a 2 year old, he still has leaky eyes, and I just use a warm cloth to wash his face. No other chickens are bothered with it and he lives with another roo who doesn't seem to notice the drainage.

Hay and straw can hold in moisture and cause mold which is not good for chickens. Large flake pine shavings are a lot drier, and can be stirred often to keep things cleaner. I have a hen who has watery eyes only during very cold mornings. Hopefully your chick is just fine.

Thank you, im just a little worried because its a tiny bit swollen in the front of her eye. Its not getting worse, just staying the same. She doesnt seem to be affected by it though. Its probably nothing. Hopefully!

Swelling around the eye, along with sticky eye drainage or foam can be symptoms of mycoplasma (MG.) Besides the Terramycin ointment, if you suspect that, Tylan 50 injectable 1/4 ml twice a day given orally for 5 days would be good to treat symptoms of MG. Instead Tylan Powder or Oxytetracycline can be put in the water.
