Hi! I just got new day old chicks today from McMurray Hatchery. I'm not sure which chick is which breed really. One of the chicks (maybe a buff orpington) has a swollen, protruding, throbbing, darkened anus (if that's what chicks parts are called). I haven't seen any paste on it, just noticed that it was picking back there and then found it. Its not very active either. I read some other similar threads and tried soaking her booty in warm water and vaseline, but still no different. I'm also dipping her beak to see if she will drink more. Im really new to chicks, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want her to die :( I can post a pic if I need to!

Also, there is another one (a brown one) that is very lethargic, won't drink or eat and seems to have one wing kind of hanging. Any thoughts on this one? I've been dipping her beak too, trying to get her to drink.

Thanks so much in advance!!

The one with the protruding anus first. If you have preparation H use that, smear it on, wait a few minutes and the GENTLY push the anus back in. If you don't have any prep H use a sugar water paste. For the first week for all newborn chicks I put vitamin and electrolyte powder from dur vet that I get from TSC in their water. Keep dipping their beaks until you see them drink on their own. If you can without hurting them, open their beaks and put a crumble or two in their mouths, not down their throats. If they were mine, I would separate out the ones that don't seem to be doing well and make absolutely sure they are kept warm enough with feed sprinkled on the floor of their brooder. Don't let anyone peck at them.

Ok, will keep doing the Prep H. I am putting Quik Chik in their water and I will separate them. Thanks so much!! Do you know why that ones anus is doing that?

Probably pasty butt and/or the stress of shipping. Add some buttermilk to the feed ASAP. It will boost the natural stomach microbes and get things back to normal.

Separate them so the more active chicks don't hurt them. Do't worry about food just give then water (with a tiny bit of sugar) with an eye dropper, Also keep them warm but not over heated but don't cause more stress by over handling them.
