I have a four day old (I think) Bantam chick that can't put weight on one of his legs. I got him from a feed store. When he was in the brooder that the feed store, the other chicks were stepping all over him and picking on him. He's such a small little guy and I'd hate for him to die. Right now I have him separated from my bigger chicks so they don't injure him. He eats and drinks fine but only if you give it to him. He can't walk on the one leg and has a lot of trouble standing. I think it might be dislocated but I wouldn't know how to tell. He mainly just lays on his side and sleeps. I've been feeding him plain yogurt and medicated chick feed. He also gets a couple drops of Pedialyte and I pick him up and take him to his water every couple of hours. I've had him for two days now and he's gotten a little better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi @dandelionchick :frow Welcome To BYC

Do you have any photos of the leg?
Is the hock (joint) swollen or red?

It's hard to know with chicks - look at slipped tendon?

Hand feeding is good - keep him hydrated and eating. You can also give him a couple of drop of Poultry Nutri-Drench or add that to the water. Sometimes, even with our best efforts, chicks may have leg deformities or a leg issue may not be fixable so they fail to thrive.

Keep us posted.

He died this morning before I was able to do anything about his leg. The hock wasn't swollen but it was red and irritated. The bone was below the hip almost to the bottom. His other leg was fine and in the right place but he didn't stand up at all. I really appreciate the help and hopefully this won't happen to any of the other chicks.

I'm sorry to hear you lost him:hugs

Even though he didn't survive, he got to feel love and kindness in his short time. It was very sweet of you to take a less than well chick home from the feed store and give him comfort.

One of my other chicks has diarrhea and I've been cleaning him up twice a day. None of my other chicks have this problem. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Could it be contagious to the other chicks?

What is your brooder temperature?
Photos of your set-up and the poop may be helpful. (photos of chicks too:))

Is the poop hard that is sticking to the bum or are you cleaning up the vent since the poop is so loose?

What else are you giving the chicks besides chick starter and water (any treats, vitamins, electrolytes, probiotics, etc.)?

Hi @Kimber38 I'm sorry your chicken is having trouble. It may be better to start a new thread/post about your chicken so you can get answers tailored for your specific problem.

Check your chicken over - does she have any wounds? If she was beat up by another bird, it can sometimes take them several days to recover. She may be sore or have some sprains/other injuries. Keep her separated for several days (if possible, house her near the flock so she can see them).
