Chicken acts weird and then lays the weirdest egg in the middle of the grass. HELP!!

She was fine today all the way to 6:00 in the afternoon and then she started to just stand in one spot and look into space it seemed. I went out to try and pick her up and she stood there and let me pick her up, which is unusual, she usually runs away but i ccan still grab her. this time she did nothing at all, i read of and it said she may be egg bound and i went back out and picked her up and felt around in the back area to see if i could see an egg out the butt or feel one and nothing, then i went in my house to talk to my dad about it (im 16) and then i looked art her and there was this, the pictures below, what is this, i know it is a double yoke but what the heck is the worm looking thing. It came out in a ball and then i moved it and it is a long skinny worm looking thing. Any ideas??

That looks like a soft shelled egg to me and the symptoms you described prior to her laying it also fit the profile.

Soft shelled eggs are difficult for the hen to lay as when her muscles contract to grip the egg, the shell is pliable and therefore, harder for her to grip and push out. Her standing in the garden, not moving is probably her trying to expel it.

Do you have oyster shell available for your hens? This may be a one of or she may need additional calcium. I have a hen who lays soft shells when she is moulting and I know straight away that she is having trouble when she exhibits the symptoms you described. She usually lays the egg on the roost overnight when she has relaxed.

Hi Mason,

I also want to say its looks like a soft shell egg she was having trouble laying. At 16 you are doing great learning to care about the chickens and what is going on with her.
That's show responsibility and its wonderful to see in someone your age. Keep up the great work. Get them some oyster shells that are ground up and give to the chickens also along with there food. This should be in a separate bowl so you can monitor it.
