Hi! im new to the forum but ive used the website a few times. I got myself a log in to explore options for waterers so ill be doing that shortly.
We have 41 Chickens, 6 ducks and 21 chicks (and 10 eggs). I keep brahmas, legbars, leghorns, isabrowns, RIW, marans PMR, polish and Duccles all with a legbar rooster. We have grown out 2 legbar x brahma hens and have legbar x most of our above breeds in our chick set up at the moment waiting on some gorgeous easter eggers to grow out!
We keep muscovies, indian runners and khaki campbells for ducks. I love the muscovies and i think i should have stuck to muscovies but we bought runners because muscovies dont lay as consistently and then we bought khakis as an impulse buy. the khakis lay great but arent friendly and always get into things they shouldnt. the indian runners are sweet but very timid. We do have to trim muscovy wings though, the girls can fly and seem far too interested in the direction of the neighbours dogs... I definitly recoment muscovies if your looking into ducks, they are beautifully tameable and quiet with awesome eggs.
If youre choosing between ducks and chickens i would say ducks! My husband doesnt like duck eggs so we have both but if i did this on my own id have 40 muscovies instead. and a massive water issue lol. ducks are cleaner if they have enough grass, their poop just soaks straight into the grass! the chicken poops are little land mines! but the water is and has always been an issue, they mess it so quickly and they mess up any chicken waters too! and their pond is the bane of my life, it is always dirty no matter what i do... but they are so easy, very disease hardy, much less tempting to dogs, quiet (muscovies) and their eggs are so much better (to me)!
