We've had our broody hen sitting on one egg for a while, and honestly didn't think it would hatch. We had her in a pet carrier that we locked at night on a low ish shelf in the coop. Last night a racoon got in and was rolling the crate around and low and behold the chick was born last night too!
I have seen them both eating but I just got a really good look just now and the chick has an injury under one wing. The mom pecked it a few times and it went back under her
Wound is about the size of the area under the wing, wing looks a little held at different angle
Baby is chirping and eating. Wound looks dry
SHOULD I PUT ANTIBIOTIC ointment on it
There were quite a few mama feathers in the cage too
I feel so bad as I almost put carrier in the barn with the other other chickens night but they've been in the coop and doing ok. I should have listened to my instincts
Any advice re wound care or should I leave alone??

! Pleased you joined us but sorry to hear about the raccoon attack. Yet another reason to hate those things! If the wound is dry and appears to be healing I wouldn't put anything on it. Just my opinion. You might post in the link below - others may have a different idea. Good luck to you and that chick!

The raccoon has found your chickens and will keep coming back till it finishes them all off or you exterminate it. Maybe the knocking around damaged the egg and that is why the chick popped out. Maybe it wasn't due yet. In the chaos it's wing may have been damaged.

Raccoons are cunning beyond belief, have tons of patience and opposable thumbs - if you can open a lock, so can they plus they can shred chicken wire. If you don't have 1/2inch hardware cloth around the brood & coop area, you are just asking to have a coon tear off whatever body part it can snag and eat it on the spot. They cause horrendous damage and death to chickens.

Please reinforce your chicken area - you have to think like a raccoon not like a mere human. Check out the predator section and coop/runs and see how you can keep them out.

Thanks guys
Our chickens are all locked securely in the barn now every night
I don't blame the racoon, they're just trying to survive snd feed their babies, just not with our chickens please!!
Chick is still alive today so someone suggested some chick feed with antibiotics for a while so I'm going to get some
My instinct is to keep the wound dry also
Say a prayer!! This is a steep learning curve, but we're enjoying it and LOVE the eggs!!

Mama and chick doing great and I ended up doing nothing!
I do scoop her and baby up at bedtime and put them in barn in carrier so protected from other chickens!
All black hen with total white chick, I'm thinking its not her baby! Lol, she believes it is do that is all that matters
Happy chickens!!
