What should/can I do!? We finally fenced in our side yard and let the chickens out last night to roam "free" for awhile. One of my Buff Orpingtons found a cigarette butt that someone must have thrown out of their car or something. I tried to get it from her but she swallowed it before I could grab it. Will it pass? I don't see how she will be able to digest it. Help!

Tobacco is a great wormer and pesticide. Maybe the chicken will get a benefit.

It should be alright. Funny what they will eat sometimes. Don't they know those things are addicting?

Wish ya the best.

Oh dear ! Those have filters in them. I don't think the filter will cut her. It would be like eating cotton. I'm not sure you can do anything at this point but watch her closely. Make sure her crop does not get impacted from it. On the positive side it is soft and hopefully it will pass? I wish I had better advice for you but I'm not sure you can do anything at this point but keep a good eye on her. Those butts are a fibrous material and luckily they are soft. My guess is she will pass it eventually. Just watch her and make sure her crop is emptying and she continues to poop OK. I.really hope for the best! Lets hope it will pass without causing an obstruction. Good luck. I wish I had better advice for you! Maybe someone else knows of something to do? I hope she will be OK and I'm so sorry this happened! Let's hope for the best! Good luck and God bless.

How big was the cig butt? She will probably be fine,if chickens can eat mice, snakes, string, etc. then i'm sure one butt will do her no harm.

Thank you all for the info. I feel much better now. I was hoping she would figure out it wasn't food before she swallowed it. Oh well... she seems fine today so I guess I'll just keep an eye on her crop and make sure it doesn't get impacted.

My little 8 wk old pullet (supposedly EE) just swallowed one this morning. I figured it would be curtains for poor little "Easter", but this thread has boosted my hopes for her survival. Her size is my concern...maybe she'll just stay thirsty for a while, huh? Thanks y'all. ;)

I'm SO grateful for this forum and for all of you who take the time to share! I came on here in tears dreading that this was going to end in my husband's favorite chick suffering and dying! Thank you for allowing me to breathe!

This post makes me feel so much better. I was feeding my roo grass and treats and he stole my cigarette. I panicked. Tried to get it from him. Of course he ran with the cigarette in his mouth (holding it the right way) as funny as it looked I was not laughing. By the time I got through the coop and out in the fence he was swallowing the cigarette butt. He sure did take in a lot of tobacco, paper and of course the butt. Hoping things pass with no obstruction.
